Perimenopause · Anxiety & Low Mood

Why does perimenopause make anxiety feel so much worse, and what actually helps?

If the last year has brought a racing heart for no reason, a low mood that will not lift, or a version of you that feels permanently on edge, you are not imagining it and you are not alone. This is one of the most common perimenopause symptoms, and one of the least talked about.

I help women understand what is driving the anxiety and low mood hormonally and nutritionally, then build a realistic, food-first plan to bring it back under control, whether you are considering HRT, already on it, or looking for a non-HRT route first.

You are not overreacting

This is hormonal, not a personal failing

Oestrogen has a direct, well-established relationship with serotonin, GABA and your stress response. As it starts to fluctuate unpredictably in your late 30s, 40s and early 50s, it can turn ordinary stress into something that feels physical, sudden and hard to switch off.

Clients usually describe some combination of:

  • A racing heart or sense of dread that appears out of nowhere, sometimes over something small like traffic or a busy shop
  • Waking at 3am with your mind already racing before you have even opened your eyes
  • Irritability or a short fuse with people you would never normally snap at
  • A flat, heavy low mood that sits underneath everything, even on good days
  • Feeling less confident and less like yourself in work, social situations or driving

None of this means something is wrong with you. It means your body is going through a real, measurable hormonal transition, and it responds well to the right support.

The Root Cause Approach

What is actually driving the anxiety, underneath the hormones

Oestrogen and progesterone are only part of the picture. Blood sugar stability, gut health, nutrient status and cortisol regulation all shift how loudly perimenopause symptoms show up, and all of them can be worked on through nutrition.

BLOOD SUGAR

The anxiety and energy crash link

Blood sugar swings trigger an adrenaline and cortisol response that feels almost identical to anxiety. Stabilising it through the day is often the fastest, most underrated lever for calming the physical symptoms.

GUT & MOOD

Your gut makes most of your serotonin

The majority of your serotonin is produced in the gut, not the brain. When digestion is under strain, mood and resilience to stress tend to suffer alongside it, often unnoticed.

NUTRIENT STATUS

Magnesium, B vitamins and omega-3s

These are used up faster during perimenopause and are directly involved in calming the nervous system. Depleted levels can leave you feeling wired, tearful or unable to switch off.

A Common Question

Do supplements actually help with perimenopause anxiety?

Sometimes, but only the right ones, at the right dose, for what your body is actually short of. A lot of women end up with a cupboard full of things bought on recommendation from social media that were never matched to them personally, and wonder why nothing has changed.

Where supplements are appropriate, I use them to support a food-first plan rather than replace one, chosen after understanding your history, current diet and symptoms, not as a generic starting point.

Why I Do This Work

My interest in root-cause nutrition started with my Mum

When my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, I turned to nutrition because I needed to feel useful, making juices to get vital nutrients into her when chemotherapy made eating too painful. She made a full recovery, and what I learned about the link between food and how we feel never left me. It led me to train in Naturopathic Nutrition at the College of Naturopathic Medicine.

I have also spoken openly on my own social media about living with anxiety, including the kind that creeps in behind the wheel of a car, and it is consistently the content that resonates most with the women I work with. It is one of the reasons this page exists.

That is the approach I bring to perimenopause anxiety: practical, honest and built around what is actually going on for you, not a generic symptom checklist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Perimenopause anxiety, answered honestly

Can nutrition really help with perimenopause anxiety, or do I need HRT?

Nutrition cannot replace medical treatment where it is needed, but blood sugar balance, gut health and key nutrients all have a direct, evidenced effect on mood and anxiety. Many women use nutrition instead of HRT, others use it alongside HRT to support what medication does not fully resolve. I will always be honest with you about which route makes sense for your situation.

Why does perimenopause cause anxiety in the first place?

Fluctuating oestrogen affects serotonin and GABA, two of the brain’s main calming chemicals, while also making your stress response more reactive. Blood sugar instability, gut health and nutrient depletion all add to this, which is why the anxiety can feel sudden, physical and out of proportion to what triggered it.

How long does it take to notice a difference?

Many women notice small shifts, like steadier energy or fewer sudden waves of anxiety, within the first few weeks of stabilising blood sugar and addressing key nutrients. Deeper, lasting change usually builds over two to three months of consistent support.

Do I need to take supplements to see results?

Not always. Food comes first in every plan I build, and supplements are only added where your history and symptoms genuinely point to a gap that diet alone will not close quickly enough.

Is this done entirely online, or do I need to visit in person?

Entirely online. Every part of the process, from the free call through to your ongoing plan and check-ins, is delivered by video, so it works exactly the same whether you are in Cheshire or anywhere else in the UK.

Where are you based, and do you only see clients locally?

I am based in Nantwich, Cheshire, and see clients throughout Nantwich, Crewe, Knutsford, Hale and the wider Cheshire area in person for events and talks, but one-to-one nutrition support is offered online only, which means I work with women right across the UK just as easily as those nearby.
